I ran across this quote today and I loved it so much I had to share!
"When you write in prose, you cook the rice When you write poetry, you turn rice into rice wine. Cooked rice doesn't change its shape, but rice wine changes both in quality and shape. Cooked rice makes one full so one can live out one's life span . . . wine, on the other hand makes one drunk, makes the sad happy, and the happy sad. Its effect is sublimely beyond explanation." - Wu Qiao
It's amazing how poetry can put into words, emotions that are otherwise very elusive. I've always used poetry to help make sense of complex feelings and have found it very helpful. So, next time you find yourself confused with how you feel about a certain situation, try sitting down and writing a poem about it. You may decide it's not your thing or you just may like it. Either way, try it. Feel free to post a comment about your experience, or even better.....with your poem!!

Not All Who Wonder are Confused
You've heard it said "Not all who wander are lost." Well I say "Not all who wonder are confused." I think it is healthy to step back and take an objective look at life every once in a while. Recently I've been trying to identify places of frustration and convince myself to be brave enough to make changes where necessary. Sometimes there is a sense of safety in familiarity that makes the first step towards change a little intimidating.
Trying to decide who we want to be and what we want our life to look like is no easy task but if we don't consciously ask ourselves those questions we run the risk of putting ourselves on autopilot and having little control over the direction of our life. Here is a poem I wrote the other day in reference to how confusing it can be trying to figure out who we want to be and how sometimes the answer to that question changes as life "happens" to us.
The Journey
Venturing into the unexplored
We are acquainted with ourselves all the more
The familiar becomes redefined
As we reconcile our identity within our minds
Character tests aren't "pass or fail"
As our psyche is shaped by storms and gales
Socrates' wisdom still soundly stands
But to know thyself is an often elusive demand
